Industrial Wireless MPG for Heidenhain TNC Controllers
Heidenhain TNC controls (TNC 320, TNC 620, TNC 640, iTNC 530) are common on jig borers and toolroom mills, where operators spend long stretches at the workpiece far from the control panel. Our Industrial Wireless MPG replicates the incremental handwheel interface these controls expect — 50 m of wireless freedom in place of the coiled cable.

HR 410 (incremental) vs HR 5xx (EnDat digital)
Heidenhain sells two different families of handwheel under the TNC line, and they are not interchangeable at the connector. The HR 410 is a simple incremental handwheel: 5V TTL differential A/B quadrature, the same class of signal as the other controllers on this site. The HR 520/530/550FS handwheels instead speak EnDat 2.2, a digital serial protocol carried over the same physical connector but electrically and logically incompatible with a plain quadrature signal.
The wiring reference below covers the HR 410-style incremental interface. If your machine's original handwheel is an HR 5xx unit, tell us on the quote form: EnDat retrofits are handled case by case and are not assumed by the figures on this page.
Typical wiring matrix: wireless receiver to Heidenhain TNC (HR 410-style port)
Axis select and feed override are read by the TNC as discrete keypresses on the handwheel connector, with the pin map set per TNC model and machine builder wiring.
| Receiver terminal | TNC input function | Typical HR 410 pin | Electrical parameter |
|---|---|---|---|
| +5V | Handwheel supply | Sub-D pin 13 | Powers base receiver unit |
| 0V | Common ground reference | Sub-D pin 14 | Signal common |
| Phase A1 / /A1 | MPG Phase A (differential) | Sub-D pin 1/2 | 5V TTL differential quadrature |
| Phase B1 / /B1 | MPG Phase B (differential) | Sub-D pin 3/4 | 5V TTL differential quadrature |
| Axis select | X / Y / Z / 4th axis keys | Keypad matrix (machine-specific) | Discrete keypress emulation |
| Feed x1 | Selects 0.001 mm increment | Keypad matrix (machine-specific) | Discrete keypress emulation |
| Feed x10 | Selects 0.010 mm increment | Keypad matrix (machine-specific) | Discrete keypress emulation |
| Feed x100 | Selects 0.100 mm increment | Keypad matrix (machine-specific) | Discrete keypress emulation |
| E-stop loop | Emergency stop circuit | Hardware *ESP input | Drops machine loop within 100 ms on link loss |
This reference covers the HR 410-style incremental interface. EnDat-based HR 5xx handwheels are out of scope.
